FAQ’S

Q:  What is Dr. Comfort Laboratory, and what do they do?
A:  Dr. Comfort established Dr. Comfort Lab to add the technical expertise of insert fabrication and shoe modifications to its repertoire of services offered in-house.  In so doing, Dr. Comfort offers a “one stop shop” for your pedorthic needs, simplifies your billing, and provides the same high caliber you have come to expect from our product.

Q:  How long is turnaround time on your products?
A:  Dr. Comfort Lab boasts a turnaround time of 3-5 days in-house for A5513 custom diabetic inserts and simple shoe modifications, and 4 to 7 days for L5000 toe fillers and more complex shoe modifications.  Please note that these times may fluctuate 24 to 48 hours during periods of heightened demand.

Q:  What products does Dr. Comfort Lab provide?
A:  Dr. Comfort Lab products break into two distinct categories:  First, custom diabetic inserts (A5513 and L5000) with accommodations as necessary i.e. offloading, Morton extensions, metatarsal bars.  Second, shoe modifications to correct conditions such as, heel lifts, flanges, and rocker soles.

Q:  How many toe fillers (L5000) will Medicare allow?
A:  Medicare will allow only one (1) toe filler per foot per calendar year.

Q:  Is there any charge for modification to your inserts?
A:  Generally speaking, no.  The exceptions are for additions of carbon plates that are not provided by the office and for use of cork on a non-toe filler insert.

Q:  What Shoe Modifications are available?
A:  Some of the shoe modifications we provide include: shoe elevations, rocker soles, medial or lateral wedging, medial or lateral stabilizers, brace preparation strap lengthening/shortening, metatarsal bars, internal/external heel lifts, vibram resole, and others upon request.

Q:  Will Dr. Comfort Shoes accommodate a metal leg brace?
A:  Yes, but we caution you to use care when splitting the sole to not expose the internal parts of the sole.

Q:  Is a steel shank included in brace preparation for a shoe?
A:  Yes, it is included along with a 1/8” EFM midsole.  We DO NOT attach the brace.

Q:  What materials may I use for patient impressions?
A:  We accept all materials except wax as it does not hold form adequately during shipping.  If you choose to use plaster, please be sure it is dried completely and packed well to minimize risk of breakage.  WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR MOLDS DISTORTED DURING SHIPPING.  Dr. Comfort provides Biofoam sets by the dozen for $38.00 including shipping.

Q:  How long are patient impressions kept?
A:  Poured plaster molds are kept for 90 days and digital scans are kept indefinitely; however, we recommend recasting the patient every 6 months due to minute changes that can occur in the foot.  If you are confident that there has been no appreciable change to the patient foot, we will be happy to remake custom inserts from your previous mold.
